Glow-plug warning light stays on or flashes: what to report

A coil symbol is not automatically a diagnosis of failed glow plugs. When it appears, whether it goes out and any change in engine running matter. Check the meaning and prescribed next step for the exact model.

Published 18 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.

General guidance cannot confirm that your car is safe to drive. The existing workshop photograph is illustrative, not evidence of this fault.

Identify the symbol and when it appeared

Describe the symbol, colour, message and timing: ignition switched on, starting or engine running. Take a photograph only while safely parked, without recreating the issue. If unsure about the symbol, do not name it from a picture of a similar car. The handbook may assign a different meaning or consider other warnings appearing alongside it. Exact wording is more useful for arranging assessment than a guessed component diagnosis.

A Volkswagen example is not a rule for every diesel

Volkswagen distinguishes brief preheating before starting from its diesel indicator staying on or flashing while the engine runs, which may signal an engine-management fault. This does not make the same instructions applicable to every vehicle. Follow the exact model's handbook and actual circumstances. This guide provides no universal permission to continue driving and no waiting period claimed to be safe with an active warning.

Report any accompanying change in running

Mention reduced power, jerking, uncommanded stalling or difficult starting if already observed. Serious changes, smoke, leakage, overheating or a red warning call for a safe stop and appropriate assistance. Do not try hard acceleration or another journey to reproduce the fault. If the car remains parked, say so when contacting the workshop. An absence of other symptoms does not itself establish a safe onward journey; first check the vehicle-specific instructions.

Diagnosis is not an automatic glow-plug purchase

Report the warning rather than requesting glow-plug replacement as an assumed solution. Reading fault memory can guide further checks, but a named code alone is not proof of a failed part. Findings need explanation in the context of the engine and symptoms. Do not order a pump, glow plugs or another component from the symbol alone. Confirm availability of the required diagnostic scope for the actual vehicle before booking.

Preserve information rather than trying to erase the warning

Record the known date, sequence and message. Share an existing fault report with its capture date; do not present an older record as today's finding. Do not create further tests by disconnecting parts, applying battery voltage directly to glow elements or rewriting engine-control settings. A warning disappearing after intervention does not establish a repair. Ask which information should be retained before the next assessment rather than clearing it merely for a clean dashboard.

Agree details and costs before handover

Send the make, model, year, engine specification and exact indicator behaviour. Distinguish routine preheating before a start from a new message or flashing while running. Include relevant recent work and whether the car is safely parked. A basic diagnostic charge is not automatically the price of finding and fixing every cause. Agree initial scope and approve follow-up testing or parts according to findings; the enquiry alone confirms neither an appointment nor safe driving.

Frequently asked questions

Does the coil symbol always mean bad glow plugs?

It is not a universal component diagnosis. Check the meaning in the vehicle handbook and arrange appropriate assessment for a new or unusual indication.

Can I just clear it if the car seems to run normally?

Clearing does not establish a repair and may remove useful context. Record what happened first and agree the next step for the particular vehicle.

Send only relevant details

Email only relevant photographs or records taken while safely parked. Remove unrelated personal information. The form does not accept attachments. Never put yourself at risk to document a fault.
