The same code can have a different context
The code is recorded without a current symptom
State when it was read and whether the report calls it current or stored. A symptom being absent during a visit does not close the investigation.
The engine struggles to start or cuts out
Say whether it was cold or warm and whether the starter turned. Do not repeat prolonged cranking or unsafe driving to check the code.
The fault returned after a sensor replacement
Provide the date, component identification and both scan reports. Another identical sensor without new evidence may not be a sensible next step.
What P0335 and P0336 actually mean
HELLA's code list describes P0335 as a crankshaft position sensor circuit fault and P0336 as a sensor A circuit range/performance issue. The precise supplementary description and detection conditions need checking against the particular vehicle.
A basic scanner's translation can sound more conclusive than the finding itself. Preserve the original code number as well as the text. If the report contains associated codes, provide them together rather than selecting only the one that sounds most serious.
The sensor circuit includes more than the sensor
The sensor provides crankshaft position and speed information. HELLA also highlights connections, wiring and mechanical damage to the encoder wheel during investigation. A code therefore does not establish that replacing one component will remove the cause.
Ask what supports the sensor diagnosis and what has already been checked around it. The explanation should establish whether connection repair, component replacement or further investigation is recommended. This guide cannot decide which applies to your car.
Records to preserve before the next assessment
Keep an existing scan's date, complete set of codes and recorded operating conditions where available. You do not need to buy another scanner for this purpose. Separate what you observed from an opinion someone offered after reading the fault memory.
Mention recent work before the problem appeared. Timing alone does not prove an installation error, but it helps avoid repeating a known step without examining its outcome.
A simple timeline is enough
- When the symptom or warning first appeared.
- When the codes were read and with which device, if known.
- Whether they were cleared and demonstrably returned.
- What work has already been done and how the behaviour changed.
Why there is no universal resistance test here
Sensor designs differ. HELLA warns that an inappropriate ohmmeter test can damage a Hall sensor. Without identifying the design and correct procedure, neither a shared pinout nor one resistance value can be used for all cars.
Do not bridge connectors, alter wiring or unplug the sensor for a home experiment. Avoid disconnecting the battery merely to remove a warning. A light going out without a documented verification does not prove the underlying cause has been repaired.
Agree the scope and cost of diagnosis
Reading fault memory and finding the cause are different jobs. State that you already have a particular code and request agreement on the next investigation. A basic check is not a promise to resolve every intermittent fault in a single visit.
Approve the first stage and the process for authorising further work. Repair pricing follows the findings and availability of a suitable solution. If the engine cuts out or cannot be used safely, arrange handover without another test drive; an enquiry does not automatically arrange recovery.
Your checklist before contacting the workshop
- Make, model, year, engine and the exact code with supplementary wording.
- The complete existing scan and whether codes have been cleared.
- Starting or stalling behaviour already observed, including cold or warm conditions.
- Previous component replacements or repairs and where the car is safely parked.
Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.
Frequently asked questions
Does P0335 prove the crankshaft sensor has failed?
No. It concerns the circuit; an assessment of the particular vehicle is needed to establish the cause.
Should I erase the code and wait for it to return?
Preserve the records before an agreed assessment and say if memory has already been cleared. Clearing it does not repair the cause.
Can I keep driving while the engine currently runs?
The code or current engine operation cannot confirm that. If it cuts out while driving, do not continue testing and arrange safe handover.
Agree the next step
Send the code and a short timeline to Autoservis 1 in Červený Újezd. We will agree an available first assessment for your vehicle, rather than replacing a sensor based on the fault's name. A price and appointment require separate confirmation.
