Check engine light: what should you do?

Steady or flashing, and how is the car behaving?

The important details are whether the warning stays on or flashes and whether the car drives differently. We read the fault codes and compare them with the symptoms. A code often points to a system, not necessarily the exact failed part.

When to arrange diagnostics

• The engine light stays on after starting or appears during a journey.
• The car jerks, feels weaker or uses more fuel.
• The warning returns after the fault was cleared.
• An STK inspection is approaching and you need to investigate the warning.

How we investigate

1. Ask when the light appeared and what changed.
2. Read the fault memory.
3. Compare the codes and vehicle behaviour, then recommend further checks.
4. Explain the findings before agreeing repairs or parts.

Clearing the light is not a repair

A fault-code readout starts at CZK 400. It tells us what the control unit has recorded; further diagnosis may be needed to establish the cause and appropriate next step. Clearing a code without fixing its cause may only hide it temporarily.

When not to wait

If the light flashes, the engine runs roughly, power drops, smoke appears or there is a red warning, stop safely and call before continuing. Consult the vehicle handbook for the specific warning. A website cannot confirm that your car is safe to drive.
