Which symptoms matter?

• Knocking over bumps or speed humps.
• A clunk from the front or rear axle.
• Play in the steering or uncertain handling.
• Pulling to one side.
• Uneven tyre wear.

Describe when the sound occurs and whether it appears to come from a particular wheel.

Possible areas to check

The chassis is a system, and different parts can make a similar noise. Checks may include joints, bushes, arms and anti-roll bar components; dampers, springs and mounts; steering links and play; brakes, hubs and wheel bearings; or tyres, wheels and alignment.

When to book and when to call first

Arrange a check when the noise repeats or becomes louder. If the car remains stable, use the form to describe it. If the car is unstable, pulls strongly, something rubs on a wheel or there was a heavy impact after a pothole, stop safely and call before continuing.
