Car sitting lower on one side: spring damage or another issue?

A parked car suddenly has an uneven wheel-arch gap or a visible lean. The important questions are whether it is a new change and under what conditions it is seen. A photograph alone cannot identify a spring, a damper or a safe journey to the workshop.

The short answer

Report a new drop before travelling, especially with tyre contact, visible damage or changed control. Do not get underneath for a photograph or attempt to adjust a spring. Describe the affected corner, load, circumstances and known suspension type; agree an appropriate assessment and handover before driving.

  • Identify front or rear and the vehicle's left or right side.
  • Mention a slope, uneven ground or known load without moving the car just to create a comparison.
  • Do not make a test drive where a tyre rubs or damage is visible.

Three details for the first call

Where it looks different

Describe one corner, an axle or a whole side. A wheel-arch gap is an observation, not a ride-height measurement made to the manufacturer's method.

When it changed

Mention long parking, a carried load, suspension work or an impact where known. A sequence of events helps frame the enquiry but does not establish the cause.

Suspension type

Say if you already know of air suspension, self-levelling equipment or modifications. You do not need to inspect underneath or operate the system to identify it for the first message.

A parked lean differs from bouncing after a bump

This guide concerns a change visible while parked. Repeated bouncing on the road or a knocking noise is a different observation, although symptoms can occur together. Separating them helps agree the assessment. There is no need for another drive, a speed-bump test or additional passengers to demonstrate what you have already noticed.

Uneven ground and a load can affect the appearance. Tell the workshop where the vehicle stands and what it carried if those facts are safely known. They do not automatically make a new lean harmless. One photograph or a rough arch-gap comparison cannot approve the car for continued use, and a familiar model is not a substitute for checking the actual vehicle.

A visible drop cannot select a suitable replacement spring

The spring supports load and contributes to ride height; a damper has a different role. Monroe's technical information emphasises application-specific spring selection. Variations can exist within one model range. A replacement should therefore not be chosen solely by appearance, apparent diameter or a general online parts list without establishing the vehicle's correct specification.

A break, its mounting and related components need inspection. Not every low corner has a broken coil spring. Another suspension design may require different information and specialist equipment. The available assessment or repair scope must be agreed first; this article does not advertise universal air-suspension repair or confirm that any particular complete assembly should be installed.

Tyre contact changes the next step

A damaged spring section can be dangerously close to a tyre; a convenient photograph does not rule out further damage. With rubbing, contact, tyre damage, instability or a marked sudden height change, do not use another drive as a test. Arrange appropriate assistance and a safe handover instead of assuming that a short journey cannot make the situation worse.

Do not put your hands into the gap, lift the vehicle solely for online troubleshooting or attempt to compress, pack or cut a spring. Automatically controlled suspension may move unexpectedly. Follow the handbook for the particular car. Specialist removal is not part of a homeowner observation, and this guide provides neither temporary securing instructions nor a remote approval to drive.

What the assessment and repair offer should distinguish

Agree whether the initial job includes inspection, identifying the correct specification and checking related parts. A proposal for labour and components follows the findings. Ask why that scope is recommended, what was observed on the other side and whether further work may be needed. A rule for one axle or model should not automatically be applied to every suspension design.

An inspection charge is not automatically the cost of a spring, damper, complete unit or wheel alignment. Confirm suitable procedures and parts availability for the vehicle. An enquiry should therefore describe the car and the change rather than give a predetermined parts list. The appointment, transport arrangements and permission for further work remain separate matters to agree before the job proceeds.

Your checklist before contacting the workshop

  • Model, year, engine and any known suspension specification or modifications.
  • The affected corner or side and whether the change is new.
  • Parking conditions, known load and relevant recent work or incident.
  • Existing observations of damage, rubbing or messages and a safe parked location.

Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Does one low corner prove a broken spring?

No. It is a reason for an appropriate assessment. Ground, load and suspension design also matter; the cause needs inspection.

Can I secure it temporarily and drive?

This guide does not approve temporary repairs or a journey. Suspected damage, especially tyre contact, needs appropriate help and a handover arrangement first.

Does this article promise air-suspension repairs?

No. Confirm the workshop's available scope for the particular vehicle and system before booking. A general guide is not an offer to repair every specialist design.
