Heavy steering or a power-steering warning: what to do

A sudden increase in the effort needed to turn the wheel is different from vibration at speed. Deal with control of the vehicle before guessing the cause. Neither the symbol's colour nor a restart alone establishes that the car is safe.

The short answer

If steering suddenly becomes heavy, catches or shows a red warning, stop safely and follow your vehicle's handbook. Do not take another test drive. Report the change, message and circumstances rather than ordering a pump or another guessed replacement part.

  • Record the warning colour and exact wording only when safely parked.
  • Distinguish resistance from vibration, pulling and off-centre steering.
  • If control is uncertain, arrange assistance; our workshop phone is not a 24-hour helpline.

What has actually changed?

More effort

The wheel requires more force than usual. Say whether you noticed this while parking, after starting or during a journey; do not recreate the problem.

Catching or uneven resistance

A catching, locking or different feel between directions matters. Do not force the steering or repeatedly turn it from lock to lock.

A warning without an obvious change

Report the exact message even if the wheel still feels normal. A steering symbol is not automatically the same fault as reduced assistance.

When to stop rather than try another journey

A pronounced or sudden steering change, catching, a recent wheel impact or a stop instruction on the display requires a safe response. Choose a suitable stopping place according to the circumstances, retain control and arrange appropriate help once stopped. Do not photograph the dashboard while driving. An online guide cannot confirm that a particular car can safely reach a workshop.

Volkswagen distinguishes red and amber steering warnings and gives different instructions for them. A procedure for one model is not a universal instruction for other vehicles. We do not recommend a generic reset, battery disconnection or short drive to extinguish a symbol. Follow the instructions for your car and consider its actual controllability, not just the warning colour.

Electric and hydraulic assistance are not interchangeable

Steering designs differ. Advice to add power-steering fluid does not apply to every car, and a pump replacement cannot be priced as the assumed answer. Depending on the system, assessment may concern mechanical parts, power supply or assistance. You do not have to identify the system yourself: start with the make, model, year and engine details.

A recent flat battery, jump start or repair may provide a useful timeline. It does not prove that clearing a code or replacing the battery will solve the steering problem. Explain what changed and when the warning first appeared. Avoid changing the evidence by randomly clearing fault memories before the assessment.

What to agree before bringing the vehicle

Your enquiry should separate turning resistance from a shaking steering wheel, pulling to one side or an off-centre wheel following an impact. Those symptoms have related guides of their own. Say whether the problem was continuous or happened once, and whether an existing diagnostic report is available. There is no need to make a new recording during a journey.

Our website offers chassis assessment and checks of related steering components. That is not a promise to rebuild every electric power-steering system, program modules or repair a steering rack. Confirm the assessment available for your model and whether a specialist may be needed. Recovery or other assistance must be arranged separately.

An assessment price is not a fixed steering-repair price

First establish what the initial assessment includes and how further work will be authorised. A listed chassis check does not necessarily cover every electrical test or steering dismantling operation. Ask for the scope to be confirmed for your symptom; a general check and a completed system repair are different services and should not be compared as identical quotations.

The eventual quote should identify labour, required parts and any follow-up operations justified by findings. We do not promise a price range or a one-part cure without assessment. A useful opening message is: “The steering became much heavier after [circumstance], the display says [wording], and the vehicle is now [safe parked location].”

Your checklist before contacting the workshop

  • Make, model, year, engine and steering-system details if known.
  • Resistance, catching, a warning or another clearly described observation.
  • Recent impact, servicing or battery problems, if known.
  • Current parked location and an existing report with unrelated personal information removed.

Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Should I just top up power-steering fluid?

Not every vehicle uses that fluid. Do not add anything without identifying the system and cause; a loss of fluid also needs explanation.

The warning disappeared. Is the fault fixed?

Disappearance alone does not establish the condition of the steering. Report the original message and any change in control, and follow the instructions for your model.

Can I book a pump replacement immediately?

First establish whether the vehicle has that pump and whether it is responsible. Book assessment of the observed problem rather than an unverified diagnosis.

Agree the next step

Autoservis 1 is at Unhošťská 92, Červený Újezd, near Unhošť, Hostivice, Kladno and Prague-West. Describe the steering problem and agree the assessment and handover. Our Mon–Fri 8:30–17:00 workshop phone is not a round-the-clock assistance service.
