Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.
The existing workshop image is illustrative; it does not document this specific fault. This guide cannot confirm whether your vehicle is safe to drive.
First separate the driving conditions
Do you feel the shake in the steering wheel, seat or whole body? Does it occur without braking, only under acceleration or when the brake pedal is pressed? Report the approximate conditions you remember from normal driving. Do not make another fast run to find an exact speed, particularly if the vibration is becoming stronger.
Balancing and alignment are different
An imbalance in the wheel and tyre assembly can cause vibration. Alignment concerns wheel angles; it is not another name for balancing. Neither is a universal solution to every shake. If the car also pulls to one side, describe both symptoms so the inspection can establish an appropriate next step.
What changed after a pothole or wheel swap?
The timing matters: did it start after changing wheels, hitting a pothole or having another repair? The workshop needs to consider tyre and rim condition, wheel fastening and, depending on the findings, play or other mechanical causes. Ordering balancing alone without checking visible damage may miss the underlying problem.
When to stop rather than try another journey
Sudden strong vibration, unstable handling, suspected wheel looseness, tyre damage or a marked deterioration after an impact requires a safe stop. Discuss assistance or transport. Roadside tightening or work without suitable equipment and safe conditions is not a substitute for inspection.
Booking a check and understanding the quote
Include the model, year, approximate mileage, where you feel vibration and whether braking affects it. Mention the last wheel change or any impact. Ask for the initial inspection scope to be confirmed. Balancing, tyre repair and suspension repair are different jobs; no single price or defective part can be established from the symptom alone. If the vibration occurs exclusively while braking, use the related guide below.
A useful service enquiry
Describe the symptom, when it occurs and any warning lights. Include the make, model, year and approximate mileage. Send relevant photographs or reports by email; the enquiry form does not accept attachments. Do not record or use your phone while driving.
