Tyre sidewall bulge: what it means and arranging a replacement

A tyre can hold its pressure and still be damaged. A new outward bubble in the sidewall is not a cosmetic mark that wheel balancing will remove. Deal with safety and vehicle handover before choosing the replacement.

The short answer

Do not continue driving on a tyre with a visible sidewall bulge. Michelin associates this with damage to the internal supporting structure and says the tyre cannot be repaired. From a safe place, arrange assistance or a safe replacement method appropriate to the car and its handbook. A photograph or normal pressure reading cannot approve a journey to the workshop.

  • An outward bubble is different from a slight inward sidewall indentation.
  • Sealant, inflation and balancing cannot restore damaged supporting structure.
  • A replacement needs the full size and specification, not just the wheel diameter.

Describe the shape you actually found

An outward bubble

A newly visible bulge in the sidewall needs attention before another journey. Do not drive to see whether it grows, or press it with a tool to test it.

A slight indentation or groove

Some radial tyres have a construction-related indentation. Do not automatically call it a bulge, or use that possibility to dismiss unclear damage. Ask for a professional assessment if uncertain.

A cut, scuff or pressure loss

Describe each separately. The size of a mark in a photo does not establish the depth of a cut or the internal condition. Slow pressure loss without a bulge has its own guide.

Safety comes before comparing tyre prices

If the problem becomes apparent during a journey, stop safely, secure the vehicle and follow the instructions appropriate to the location. An inspection is not more important than staying clear of moving traffic. Do not walk around a car on a dangerous shoulder simply to take a photograph, or lie beside it to inspect the inner face of a wheel.

Call your roadside assistance provider or agree a suitable handover arrangement. Spare wheels and other emergency equipment have vehicle-specific conditions; this guide does not establish whether you can safely use them. Autoservis 1 does not promise its own recovery or mobile call-out service. A workshop appointment is not approval to drive there on the damaged tyre.

Why inflation, sealant and balancing are not a repair

Michelin describes bulging associated with damaged supporting cords and distinguishes it from certain normal indentations in radial sidewalls. The practical distinction is that an outward bulge is not an ordinary puncture in a repairable tread area. A correct pressure reading does not remove that distinction and is not a test of the tyre's structural strength.

Do not pierce the bubble, reduce pressure to try to flatten it, or use sealant as a repair. If an impact preceded the discovery, mention any vibrations or steering change already noticed. The workshop can then discuss an appropriate wheel assessment and related checks. One photograph cannot establish that the tyre is the only affected component.

Prepare the specification rather than just a brand name

For an initial enquiry, provide the car's make and model, full tyre size, load and speed ratings, any additional markings and whether it is a summer, winter or all-season tyre. Mention another available set of wheels if you have one. Read markings only where safely accessible; there is no need to crawl beneath the vehicle to complete an enquiry.

Ask whether replacing one tyre is suitable, or whether the condition of the remaining set and the vehicle requirements call for a different scope. There is no universal internet rule requiring exactly one, two or four in every case. The decision needs the actual condition and compatible specification of the remaining tyres, not simply a matching manufacturer name printed on their sidewalls.

What a useful replacement quote should include

Separate the replacement tyre price from the fitting work. Ask whether removal and fitting, balancing, any valve-related work and handling of the old tyre are included. Describe any requested post-impact assessment separately. A published price for changing a complete seasonal set does not automatically establish the total for this individual damage case.

Autoservis 1 can source suitable tyres after you approve a quotation; availability and timing need confirmation first. An enquiry does not reserve a tyre already in stock. Send the details you know, request suitable options and wait for the agreed scope. An honest replacement price requires the size, specification and current supply offer rather than a generic figure attached to the word bulge.

Your checklist before contacting the workshop

  • Which wheel is affected and whether the vehicle is safely parked.
  • The full size, ratings and other known tyre markings.
  • Any preceding impact, vibration or steering change already noticed.
  • A safe vehicle handover arrangement and a request for a quote including fitting.

Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a few kilometres if it holds pressure?

Normal pressure does not confirm sound internal structure. Do not continue driving on a visibly bulging tyre; arrange a safe solution from the parked location.

Can it be repaired like a nail puncture?

No. A sidewall bulge is not an ordinary repairable tread puncture. Sealant or a patch cannot restore damaged supporting structure.

Must I always buy two or four tyres?

There is no universal replacement quantity. The vehicle requirements and the actual specification and condition of the remaining tyres determine the appropriate scope.

Agree the next step

Call first from a safe location and describe the damage. For a replacement quote, provide the known tyre specification and vehicle details. Autoservis 1 is at Unhošťská 92, Červený Újezd, serving Unhošť, Hostivice, Kladno and Prague-West. Agree a safe handover before travelling.
