Reading the example 205/55 R16 91V
205/55
205 is the nominal width in millimetres. 55 is the sidewall-height-to-width ratio expressed as a percentage, not a sidewall height of 55 millimetres.
R16
R describes radial construction. 16 is the nominal matching rim diameter in inches. This alone does not establish suitable width, load capacity or the complete specification.
91V and other markings
91 is a load index and V a speed category, not a direct statement of kilograms and speed. Include XL and any other identifiers so they can be considered for the particular vehicle.
The same nominal size does not mean the same tyre
Michelin explains size, load and speed information as separate parts of a tyre marking. An enquiry needs all of them, not just the largest numbers on the sidewall. Two tyres marked 205/55 R16 can differ in other respects. A clear photograph of the full relevant marking helps avoid a mismatch; use an accessible view without lifting the car.
XL refers to a reinforced or extra-load specification, not permission to overload the vehicle. Do not omit any original-equipment specification marking either. This guide is not an approved-fitment table for your car. Its purpose is to gather complete information so suitability can be checked before purchase, rather than choosing by a similar product title in an online shop.
Use the vehicle specification, not only the present set
Check the available approved vehicle information and the manufacturer's instructions. If uncertain, report the current marking and state that suitability has not been established. A previously fitted tyre is not automatically the correct reference, especially on a recently purchased used car. Have the particular choice confirmed before buying it, rather than discovering a mismatch at the fitting appointment.
Some applications have different front and rear specifications. Do not infer the second axle from the first. A speed rating is not a recommendation to travel at that speed, and a maximum-pressure marking on the sidewall is not the vehicle's normal prescribed pressure. Correct pressure depends on the vehicle instructions and load; this article therefore does not prescribe a universal setting or offer vehicle-specific legal fitment exceptions.
Three different jobs require different quotation details
A complete-wheel swap concerns sets with tyres already fitted to the wheels. Removing and fitting tyres on the same rims is a different request. Supplying a new set adds product selection and availability. Distinguishing these situations in the first message reduces the risk that the quote assumes a different job from the one you actually need.
Autoservis 1 also accepts enquiries about sourcing new tyres. Provide the required quantity, intended seasonal use and full specification. Availability, suitable options and price must be confirmed; this article is not a stock listing. Say if you already own the tyres, and mention known damage or differences between the front and rear markings before the appointment is agreed.
Make the first message specific
- State whether you want new tyres with fitting, your own tyres fitted, or a complete-wheel swap.
- Include the full size and ratings, quantity and any front/rear differences.
- Add the model and year; describe valves or pressure monitoring only as far as you actually know.
Compare prices without leaving out the work
Ask whether the proposal covers tyres alone or the agreed fitting work and associated materials as well. Clarify balancing, valves and any pressure-sensor work according to the actual equipment. Those items are not automatically identical for every car. Compare quotations for the same scope rather than treating the lowest isolated figure as the total cost of the appointment.
If sending a photograph, include the relevant marking without unnecessary personal information. Do not crawl under the car, remove a wheel or stop somewhere unsafe to get it. For a damaged, deflated or otherwise unsafe tyre, safe parking and an appropriate next step come first. A routine tyre-supply enquiry does not resolve an urgent roadside situation or approve driving to the workshop on that tyre.
Your checklist before contacting the workshop
- Make, model and year, including any known different wheel specification.
- Complete size, load index, speed category, XL and other relevant markings.
- Quantity, front/rear axle and the summer, winter or all-season requirement.
- New tyres, fitting your own tyres or a complete-wheel swap, plus known pressure-monitoring details.
Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.
Frequently asked questions
Is saying R16 enough?
No. The complete tyre marking, vehicle details and type of work are needed. Rim diameter alone cannot establish a suitable replacement.
Can I simply buy the same marking as the fitted tyre?
First establish that the present specification is approved for the vehicle. The existing set alone is not evidence that the choice is correct.
Is DOT the same as a load rating?
No. Production date, size and ratings are different information. Replacement selection needs the full specification; tyre age is covered in a separate guide.
Agree the next step
Send Autoservis 1 the complete marking and the work required. Agree suitable options, availability and quotation scope before ordering. The tyre workshop at Unhošťská 92, Červený Újezd serves the surrounding Unhošť, Hostivice, Kladno and Prague-West area.
