Good all-season tyres can suit less demanding use in mild conditions. Regular mountain journeys, high mileage or having to travel whatever the weather favour separate summer and winter sets. The specific tyre model matters as much as the category.
When all-season tyres may make sense
If you mostly drive shorter local trips and prefer not to manage two sets, all-season tyres are worth considering. Think about whether you can avoid demanding winter conditions and how the chosen model performs on wet, dry and snowy roads.
Is the car mainly for shopping and local journeys, or frequent long motorway trips? If it snows in the morning, can you delay the trip? Those answers are more useful than mileage alone.
When to prefer separate seasonal sets
Summer and winter sets allow you to choose tyres for different seasonal conditions. They make more sense for regular mountain trips, demanding use and high mileage. Winter tyres still do not remove the risk of skidding or replace adjusting speed to the conditions.
Mostly local driving

Daily commuting and mountain trips

Compare the full cost, not just four tyres
- The price of tyres with the approved size and specifications.
- Fitting and any additional rims.
- Seasonal changes and any storage with your chosen provider.
- Expected use and how long you plan to keep the car.
An all-season set wears throughout the year. Two sets split the mileage, but both also age. Without actual quotations and your usage pattern, it would be misleading to promise an exact saving. See our tyre-service prices; we quote new tyres individually.
Choose a specific model carefully
Check the size, load index and speed specifications approved for your car. Compare independent tests in the relevant size and individual disciplines, not only the overall ranking. Different models from the same brand need not perform alike.

All-season does not mean maintenance-free
Check pressure against the vehicle manufacturer’s specification, tread and damage regularly. Do not skip an inspection before winter just because you are not swapping sets. Uneven wear or vibration needs investigating; the cause may not be the tyre alone.
