How to store tyres and complete wheels between seasons

After a seasonal change, the other set may spend months off the car. Loose tyres and complete wheel-and-tyre assemblies need different handling. This guide concerns a set already removed, not lifting the vehicle or removing wheels at home.

The short answer

Inspect the set, clean it appropriately and let it dry fully before storage. Keep loose tyres standing upright without hanging them. Complete wheels can be stored on their sides in a stable low stack or on a suitable rack, following manufacturer guidance. Protect them from sunlight, heat and chemicals. Reassess condition before fitting again.

  • Distinguish unmounted tyres from complete wheel assemblies.
  • Record previous positions and visible damage.
  • Storage neither stops ageing nor repairs a previous pressure loss.

Before putting the set into bags

Record previous wheel positions and any pressure loss, vibration, damage or uneven wear. Position labels preserve useful history. They are not an automatic instruction to rotate the set next time; suitable positions depend on the car, sizes and tyre design.

Pirelli recommends gentle cleaning without petrol, oils or solvents. Continental specifies that the set should be dry before bagging. An arbitrary shine treatment is unnecessary. Discuss visible damage with the tyre workshop before reuse rather than concealing it in packaging.

Loose tyres versus complete wheels

Store unmounted tyres standing side by side, without hanging them by the bead. For tyres mounted on rims, Continental describes side-stacking in a stable arrangement or hanging on an appropriate rack. Avoid a method that distorts the rubber or risks a heavy assembly falling.

Follow the rack’s instructions and load rating, secure it against tipping and handle wheels without risking dropping them. Do not take a universal storage pressure from an online tip: check the instructions for the particular assembly. Before fitting, pressure needs checking for the vehicle and intended load.

Choose a suitable storage space

Choose a dry, cool indoor area protected from direct sunlight, heat sources and chemicals. Continental also warns about ozone from equipment using certain electric motors. An off-season set outdoors under a sheet does not have the same protection as a suitable indoor environment.

Consider safe access when the set needs moving again. A bag does not replace suitable surroundings or justify enclosing wet tyres. This guide is not an offer of storage at Autoservis 1; that service is not confirmed here.

What storage cannot repair

If a tyre lost pressure before removal, months off the car will not repair it. A bulge, cracks or uneven wear do not disappear either. Report those issues when arranging the next fitting, rather than discovering a known concern when departure is imminent.

Tyres age while out of use too. Record readable identification and manufacture dates, but do not decide suitability from DOT or tread depth alone. Our separate age guide explains the wider assessment. Recommended storage is not a guarantee of remaining service life.

Prepare the next fitting enquiry

Give the vehicle, tyre size and whether you will bring loose tyres or complete wheels. These are different service requests. Describe known concerns and ask about assessment, set suitability and any tyre-pressure-monitoring requirements. A wheel swap does not itself resolve every TPMS warning.

The quote should match the actual operation in the current price list and other agreed work. Inspection, fitting and resolving a known leak are not automatically one item. Prepare the set for safe transport and confirm the appointment beforehand.

Details for your enquiry

  • Loose tyres or complete wheels, their number and size.
  • Position labels, known pressure loss, previous vibration or damage.
  • How and where the set has been stored.
  • Vehicle details and the intended fitting and assessment scope.

Use existing observations. Email relevant photographs or reports; the form does not accept attachments. Do not collect records while driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hang loose tyres on hooks?

Do not hang unmounted tyres by the bead. Upright storage is recommended; do not automatically apply racks or stacking methods intended for complete wheels.

Is a cover outdoors enough?

A cover alone does not provide suitable conditions. Find a dry space protected from sunlight, heat and chemicals according to manufacturer guidance.

Does good storage mean the set is automatically safe?

No. Reassess condition, pressure, damage and suitability before use. Storage neither repairs a fault nor stops ageing.

Does Autoservis 1 offer tyre storage?

That service is not confirmed here. Fitting, wheel swaps and assessment of reported concerns can be discussed; arrange a storage location separately.
