Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.
The existing workshop image is illustrative; it does not document this specific fault. This guide cannot confirm whether your vehicle is safe to drive.
Which changes matter?
Report squealing, metallic grinding, vibration during braking, pulling to one side, a longer stopping distance or an unusually soft pedal. A burning smell or one wheel becoming unusually hot also matters. Describe what you have already noticed in normal use; do not carry out emergency-braking experiments.
Not every symptom means discs and pads
Pads and discs are only part of the system. Calipers, sliding mechanisms, fluid-related issues and uneven braking can need attention. Suspension play or tyre problems can also complicate the symptom. A photograph through the wheel rarely establishes the complete condition of both sides of the brake.
What an inspection should decide
Condition and the manufacturer's limits should guide the choice of work, rather than replacing a fixed bundle from a noise description. Tell the workshop about previous brake work, warning lights and whether the problem started suddenly. Recently fitted parts do not rule out an installation or unrelated mechanical problem.
When not to drive
A significant loss of braking, an abnormal pedal, strong grinding or evidence of overheating should not wait for a routine appointment. Stop safely and arrange help. Do not rely on an online article to confirm roadworthiness or use continued driving to test whether the symptom disappears.
Requesting a useful quote
Provide the vehicle details, the main symptom and any recent repair history. The quote depends on what is worn or faulty and the parts required for that vehicle. Our separate disc-and-pad guide explains replacement decisions; this guide is about recognising symptoms that warrant inspection.
A useful service enquiry
Describe the symptom, when it occurs and any warning lights. Include the make, model, year and approximate mileage. Send relevant photographs or reports by email; the enquiry form does not accept attachments. Do not record or use your phone while driving.
