ABS or ESP warning lights: meaning and safe next steps

An ABS warning is not the same as a red brake warning. The combination of symbols, whether they remain lit and any change in braking or handling determine the next safety decision.

Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.

The existing workshop image is illustrative; it does not document this specific fault. This guide cannot confirm whether your vehicle is safe to drive.

Identify the symbol and check the vehicle manual

Stability-system names vary between manufacturers. Record the exact symbol, colour and any message while safely stationary. A brief start-up check and a warning that remains on are different situations. The instructions for your own vehicle take priority; a general guide cannot replace them.

Normal braking and driver assistance are different

With an ABS fault, ordinary braking may remain available while anti-lock or stability assistance is unavailable. This does not establish that every car with the warning is safe to drive. Additional warnings or a changed brake pedal need their own safety assessment rather than a blanket permission to continue.

Why the light does not identify one failed sensor

A warning alone does not name the defective part. The workshop needs the system information, circumstances and vehicle condition before recommending checks or a repair. Mention whether the problem followed wheel or brake work. Replacing a part speculatively or clearing the code does not demonstrate that the cause has been removed.

When to stop and arrange help

A red brake warning, unusual pedal, reduced braking, a fluid leak or unstable handling means you should not continue without professional assessment. Stop safely and call. Do not test ABS with sudden braking on the road or switch assistance systems off as an attempted repair.

Preparing an enquiry

Include the model, year, exact warnings and when they appear. Mention changes in braking, noises and recent work. A dashboard photo can be emailed; the form cannot accept attachments. Confirm the investigation scope and subsequent costs according to the findings. This guide does not promise repair of every ABS control unit or automatically confirm an appointment.

A useful service enquiry

Describe the symptom, when it occurs and any warning lights. Include the make, model, year and approximate mileage. Send relevant photographs or reports by email; the enquiry form does not accept attachments. Do not record or use your phone while driving.
