Chassis corrosion before Czech STK: surface rust or a deeper concern?

A rusty photograph cannot decide a repair or predict an STK result. A useful enquiry identifies the location, existing inspection records and the decision you need the workshop to help with.

The short answer

The significance of corrosion depends on location, component function and extent. Arrange an inspection with an identifiable finding. A workshop preparation check does not replace the official Czech STK inspection.

  • Provide any complete STK report.
  • Do not treat surface appearance as a strength assessment.
  • Confirm the available repair scope before booking it.

The visible amount of rust is not enough

Corrosion on a non-structural surface and damage at a suspension mounting or another important attachment can have different implications. Flaking material or perforation needs different attention from surface discolouration alone. Actual location, function and extent matter; a tightly framed photograph cannot establish strength or the condition of the entire underside.

Separate what you have observed from findings reported by a workshop or STK technician. Supply existing photographs and reports as history. Do not crawl under the vehicle to obtain new images without safe professional access, or attempt a home strength test by poking components.

Define the purpose of the chassis check

Explain whether you need a preventive check before STK, investigation of a recorded finding or information to decide whether to repair an older car. Ask for the affected component to be identified and the proposed next step explained. A broad description such as rusty underneath is not enough to compare work.

Mention known previous repairs, coverings or protective coatings when arranging access. If another concern is discovered, agree the scope of further assessment before repair begins. An enquiry based on a photograph does not automatically establish either the price or the remedy.

Coating and repair are different requests

Covering a surface does not demonstrate that the underlying component is sound. Obtain an identifiable finding and an appropriate proposed response first. Do not order a cosmetic covering as a substitute for resolving an issue recorded in an inspection report.

Clarify whether the proposal involves component replacement, further specialist assessment or bodywork. This page does not offer body repairs, structural welding or underbody coating at Autoservis 1. Confirm the particular work available; a specialist repair may need a different provider.

Workshop preparation and the official STK result

An authorised STK station performs the official Czech periodic technical inspection. A workshop check helps prepare and address findings, but does not guarantee a successful result. If the car has already been tested, supply the complete report rather than an isolated sentence.

This guide does not assign a defect grade, driving permission or retest deadline from a photograph. Refer to your actual current report and the responsible station for those questions. The linked British DVSA reference explains technical principles; it is not the Czech STK assessment method.

Request information that supports a repair decision

After inspection, ask for the affected location, recommended work and any uncertainty requiring further access to be separated clearly. Agree whether you are commissioning the inspection alone or an approved repair as well. That keeps the workshop brief understandable.

For an older vehicle, discuss other known faults and parts availability alongside the corrosion finding. Say explicitly if you first need information to decide about further spending. The agreed inspection output can then support that decision instead of automatically authorising more work.

Details for your enquiry

  • Vehicle and year, purpose of the check and planned STK date.
  • The complete available inspection report and previous findings.
  • Known chassis or body repairs and protective coatings.
  • Whether you need inspection, a repair proposal or decision support.

Use existing observations. Email relevant photographs or reports; the form does not accept attachments. Do not collect records while driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can a photograph show whether the car will pass STK?

It can help prepare the enquiry, but does not replace inspecting the vehicle or the official technical inspection.

Is spraying over rust enough before STK?

Covering alone does not establish component condition. Clarify the finding and appropriate response first.

Do you offer welding of a corroded body?

This article does not offer that service. Confirm the available scope after describing the request; specialist facilities may be needed.

Should I send only the defect code?

Send the complete report to preserve its context. Check deadlines and conditions for further action with the responsible STK station.

Agree the next step

Send Autoservis 1 the vehicle details and your request to agree the available scope, price and appointment. Find us at Unhošťská 92, Červený Újezd, near Unhošť, Hostivice, Kladno and Prague-West. An enquiry does not confirm a safe journey. The phone operates Mon–Fri 8:30–17:00; arrange urgent roadside help separately.
