Engine warning light: what to do and when to call a workshop

An engine warning light does not always mean an expensive repair, but it should not be ignored. The important thing is whether the car drives normally and whether other symptoms appear.

Practical advice

When you can usually book diagnostics

If the warning light is amber and the car drives normally, without shaking, smoke or loss of power, it is usually possible to arrange diagnostics soon. Do not postpone it for too long.

When calling is safer

If the light flashes, the car loses power, smokes, overheats or a red warning light appears, call the workshop before driving further. Continuing may cause more damage.

What helps in the request

Describe when the light appeared, whether the car behaves differently and whether it happened after refuelling, servicing or a longer drive. A dashboard photo can help.

How diagnostics works

Reading fault codes is only the first step. The real cause must be checked before a sensible repair can be suggested.

When diagnostics is enough and when to call

  • engine warning light is on or flashing
  • the car shakes or loses power
  • fuel consumption increased
  • rough idle
  • the warning light came back after a repair
