Which decision stage are you at?
You only have a symptom
A complete repair cost is not yet established. First ask what an initial check can determine and how further work would be approved.
You have a specific quote
Check the findings, parts and labour scope, including what remains unverified. Similarly named repairs may include different operations.
You are considering another used car
Allow for its actual condition and documented maintenance. A recently purchased car is not automatically free of further costs.
Establish condition before judging the value of a repair
For a major decision, ask for a clear distinction between confirmed findings, safety matters, areas needing further investigation and routine maintenance. Mileage alone does not describe all those categories. Also clarify the limits of the check: ordinary diagnostics is not a complete vehicle valuation or an assessment of every component.
The proposal should explain how the recommended work addresses the findings. If the full extent may only emerge after dismantling, agree a decision point and a spending boundary requiring renewed contact. Unlimited permission to “fix everything” is not a necessary condition for establishing an appropriate next step.
Compare future costs, not repair cost against vehicle value alone
For your decision, list the confirmed repair, other known maintenance, expected downtime and transport needed during that period. For an alternative, consider an actually available replacement vehicle, its checked condition and initial servicing requirements. Mark unknown items as uncertain rather than inventing amounts to complete the comparison.
ADAC's discussion of older vehicles considers both their value and repair costs. We do not apply a percentage rule to all vehicles in Czechia. Neither one completed repair nor the purchase price guarantees future reliability. Base the decision on alternatives genuinely available to you and condition that has actually been established.
Safety faults are not freely deferrable budget items
Staging work can only be useful if it does not conceal or defer a safety-critical problem. Ask what needs attention before further use and why. A cheaper option is not a good answer if it does not address the identified fault. An article or indicative budget does not confirm that the car may continue to be used.
Equally, every comfort issue does not automatically justify an immediate major investment. Ask the purpose of each recommendation and how it relates to your use. Spending decisions remain yours; the workshop should provide understandable technical evidence, not substitute its preferences for your priorities.
Questions before authorising a major job
Ask for the work scope, component identification, known additional charges and the process for new findings. When comparing two quotes, establish a matching starting condition and included operations. Another technical assessment may help with an unclear major job, but agree its availability and charge first. The lowest total alone is not a complete comparison.
Prepare actual records and briefly explain how long and for what purpose you need the vehicle. Your vehicle's circumstances matter more than the outcome of somebody else's repair. This is not an expert valuation, an insurance-claim guide or a promise of remaining service life. It is a framework for obtaining better information before making your own decision.
Your checklist before contacting the workshop
- The specific fault, existing findings and limits of checks already performed.
- An itemised quote and documented upcoming maintenance, not just a total.
- Your intended use, transport during downtime and a realistic alternative.
- Approval process and a point for a renewed decision after assessment.
Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.
Frequently asked questions
Is a repair above a certain share of the car's value always wrong?
There is no universal threshold here. Condition, repair scope, other costs and your real alternative all matter.
Must I keep repairing it because I already spent a lot?
Previous work can document condition, but further approval should depend on future use, findings and budget.
Can the workshop promise nothing else will fail for a year?
That broad promise would not be supported. One repair cannot rule out every future failure of other components.
Agree the next step
Start with the known problem, records and assessment needed when contacting Autoservis 1 in Červený Újezd. We are at Unhošťská 92, near Unhošť, Hostivice, Kladno and Prague-West. An enquiry begins a discussion; it is not approval for unlimited repairs.
