Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.
General guidance cannot confirm that your car is safe to drive. The existing workshop photo does not document the specific fault discussed here.
Smoke or a strong burning smell: act first
Stop somewhere safe and do not continue simply to reach the workshop. Keep a safe distance if there is smoke or suspected fire; call emergency assistance for a fire or immediate danger. Do not touch the rim, disc or caliper, and do not attempt to cool a hot brake with water. Discuss safe transport with roadside assistance.
What might need investigating?
One possibility is a brake that does not release properly after the pedal is released. Caliper components, guides or a parking-brake mechanism may need checking, depending on the vehicle. Heat can also have another wheel-area cause. A smell alone does not identify a failed part. Describe any humming or grinding separately rather than automatically deciding that the bearing is faulty.
Normal warmth or a new problem?
Working brakes generate heat, so warmth after a journey is not by itself a diagnosis. A noticeable change from previous use, an unusual difference you have already observed safely, smell, smoke or changed handling is more useful information. Do not reproduce it with another drive or compare temperatures by touch. Without the context, normal operation cannot be confirmed remotely.
Did it follow a repair, wheel change or long parking?
Prepare the date and scope of recent wheel or brake work and mention a long period parked. The timing helps choose checks; it does not on its own prove that earlier work was incorrect. New pads do not make strong smells or smoke automatically acceptable bedding-in behaviour. Repeated braking or driving with the parking brake applied is not a remedy.
What the inspection needs to separate
The aim is to establish whether the cause is a brake, its actuation, the hub area or another component, and whether heat has affected surrounding parts. Replacing pads alone may leave the cause unresolved. A repair should follow findings; this guide does not prescribe a caliper, bearing or complete assembly replacement, or promise repair of every system type.
Booking a check and establishing the price
Say which wheel is involved, what you observed without touching it, whether there was smoke and whether braking or handling changed. Include the make, model, year and recent work. Take photos only when safely stationary and without approaching danger. Discuss the next safe step before driving. The cost follows inspection and the required work, not the phrase “hot wheel” alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive on once it cools down?
Cooling does not confirm that the cause has gone away. With smoke, strong smells, changed braking or uncertainty, arrange guidance and transport rather than a test drive.
Does this definitely mean a faulty caliper?
No. A dragging brake is one possibility; the actual cause and repair scope need inspection.
