Three distinctions to make in your records
P0420 versus P0430
The general distinction is the bank identified. It is not a universal instruction to replace a front or rear component. Exhaust and sensor layouts depend on the engine and its documentation.
Other engine records
Include connected records such as misfire codes. Do not omit them merely because an app highlighted the converter as its preferred replacement suggestion.
Reports and history
Provide an existing emissions-test report or documentation of earlier converter work if available. A diagnostic code alone is not the result of an official inspection.
Low efficiency is not a complete component diagnosis
The general definition identifies the area of the recorded concern. It does not establish the cause, the correct replacement specification or the necessary dismantling. Walker's technical guidance distinguishes a low-efficiency code from a confirmed need for a converter. Replacing it may not resolve the concern if an underlying engine-related problem has not been addressed.
The opposite assumption, that it must merely be a cheaper oxygen sensor, is equally premature. A useful assessment supports the particular action recommended. Ask how engine condition, possible exhaust leaks and measurement were considered. These are areas for investigation, not a shopping list of components to replace together as a precaution. The applicable procedure remains specific to the vehicle.
Useful evidence before the first visit
Keep the original available scan, the status of the records and any captured operating information. Include the date, mileage and whether the engine's behaviour changed. If the light is on but you noticed no change, report that accurately. Apparently smooth running does not establish that the warning can be ignored or approve a particular journey.
Relevant history includes known engine or exhaust repairs, documented oil or coolant loss and previous component replacements. Do not dismantle anything or drive at high engine speed to try to reproduce the code. If records are missing, explain what you know and agree the starting point for the check. Guessing previous work or diagnosing the car from a similar internet example adds little useful evidence.
A fault code, readiness and an emissions result are different
P0420 or P0430 is a diagnostic record. Readiness describes the status of relevant self-checks performed by the vehicle. An emissions-test report documents the result of a particular inspection. None replaces the others. Supply the available records separately rather than compressing several different situations into the statement that the car failed its test.
Clearing the memory is not a repair or a guarantee of a successful inspection. This guide likewise does not promise that a particular replacement will make the vehicle pass. Do not use signal simulators, catalyst removal or another way of bypassing the warning. If you already have an inspection report, request assessment of the documented finding and discuss any subsequent preparation for inspection as a separate scope.
What a meaningful price proposal should include
Separate the initial scan charge, further investigation and actual repair. The required scope depends on the vehicle and findings; a code-reading price is not a price for resolving every P0420 case. Agree when the workshop will present its findings and which further work needs approval. A fixed repair figure without that information would offer false certainty rather than a useful budget.
If inspection supports replacement of an exhaust component, the proposal should identify a suitable specification, associated materials, labour and any approval needed after dismantling. Autoservis 1 undertakes exhaust repairs and replacement; the actual intervention follows inspection and agreement. Do not order a converter solely from the code or a photograph of a similar model. Existing scheduled maintenance should also remain distinguishable from the proposed fault repair.
Your checklist before contacting the workshop
- Make, model, year, engine and the complete available scan report.
- Other codes, warning-light behaviour and existing observations of engine running.
- Previous engine or exhaust work and any known fluid consumption.
- An existing emissions report where relevant, without personal details unnecessary for assessment.
Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.
Frequently asked questions
Must I immediately buy a converter after P0420?
No. The code alone does not confirm the cause or repair scope. Supporting vehicle-specific findings determine the appropriate action.
Is P0430 simply another name for the same component?
The general definition identifies bank 2. The engine's layout determines which components belong to that bank and how they should be assessed.
Can I just clear the code before an emissions test?
Clearing does not repair the cause, document a repair or guarantee a test result. Preserve the evidence and arrange assessment of the finding.
Agree the next step
Send Autoservis 1 the exact codes and vehicle details. First agree an appropriate check, then any repair and its cost. The workshop is at Unhošťská 92, Červený Újezd, near Unhošť, Hostivice and Kladno. With a dangerous symptom, call before travelling.
Discuss a P0420 or P0430 assessmentSources and limits
