Replace two or four tyres? What matters for AWD and 4×4

One damaged tyre does not automatically decide how many replacements to buy. A useful recommendation starts with the actual drivetrain, manufacturer requirements and condition of the complete set.

The short answer

Arrange an assessment of the damage and existing set first. For AWD, check the vehicle’s matching requirements; there is no single tread-depth difference suitable for every model.

  • Identify the exact drivetrain.
  • Provide details of all four tyres.
  • Agree the replacement scope before parts are ordered.

Establish why replacement is being considered

Distinguish gradual wear, an ageing set and sudden damage to one wheel. A puncture first requires a repairability assessment; scheduled replacement needs an overview of the complete set. Requesting just one new tyre in advance can skip that initial decision.

Describe the incident and any work already carried out. If you do not know the condition of the remaining tyres, leave it open for inspection. The estimate can then distinguish assessment from the proposed replacement quantity and associated workshop work.

When replacing a pair is being considered

For a routine two-tyre replacement, Michelin generally recommends placing the newer or deeper-tread pair on the rear to support wet-road stability. That general guidance does not replace vehicle instructions or an assessment of the actual arrangement.

Before agreeing to move wheels between axles, check whether the car uses the same specification at both ends. Mention staggered front and rear dimensions in your enquiry. Identifying a car as front-wheel drive is not enough to approve moving any pair to either axle.

AWD and 4×4 need more precise information

For all-wheel drive, tyre matching and differences in wear matter: different circumferences mean different wheel rotation rates. Michelin recommends a matched set of four for this application. There is no single universal tolerance for every system; the particular vehicle’s instructions and specified limits also matter.

The SUV body style does not identify the drivetrain. Supply the model, year, engine and drive variant, with the VIN if needed for checking. Do not borrow a tolerance from another vehicle or order one new tyre solely because its sidewall dimensions look the same.

Assess the whole existing set

Ask for the individual tyre identities and condition to be recorded so the recommendation has a clear basis. Discuss differences between wheels and whether the reason for uneven wear also needs investigating. A new set alone does not explain why the previous tyres wore differently.

If you have a second seasonal set, describe it separately. Avoid combining measurements from two sets in one email without identifying which is which. Where you have already bought replacement tyres, provide their exact details before reserving a fitting appointment.

Compare estimates with a defined scope

Ask whether the recommendation follows the vehicle instructions, the condition of the remaining tyres or another inspection finding. The offer should identify the product, quantity and workshop operations. Price differences become meaningful once the scope is comparable.

Contact Autoservis 1 with those details to arrange an assessment or discuss an available replacement option. This guide does not prescribe four new tyres for every vehicle or approve a pair in every case. The agreed work must suit the actual car.

Details for your enquiry

  • Model, year, engine and exact drivetrain variant.
  • Brand, model and dimensions of each current tyre.
  • Known damage, measurements and replacement history.
  • Assessment, tyre supply or fitting of your own tyres.

Use existing observations. Email relevant photographs or reports; the form does not accept attachments. Do not collect records while driving.

Frequently asked questions

Does every SUV need four new tyres together?

Body style alone does not decide this. The vehicle requirements, drivetrain and condition of its existing set matter.

What tread difference is allowed on every AWD car?

There is no universal figure to apply here. Check the exact vehicle manufacturer’s requirements and the actual tyre condition.

Should a new pair always go on the front?

Michelin generally recommends the new or deeper-tread pair on the rear. Specific instructions and a suitable arrangement must be checked first.

Are matching size markings enough for a replacement?

Supply the exact tyre model and other required specifications too. For AWD, check requirements for the complete set as well.
