Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.
The existing workshop image is illustrative; it does not document this specific fault. This guide cannot confirm whether your vehicle is safe to drive.
Describe what the car actually does
Useful observations include slow cranking, repeated clicking, lights dimming during a start, worse starting in cold weather or discharge after several days parked. Say whether the engine turns normally but does not fire; that is a different starting pattern. Mention repeated jump-starts and any warning messages.
Battery, charging or connections?
A weak battery, poor terminals, an earth connection, a starter fault or a charging issue may produce overlapping symptoms. Unwanted electrical consumption while parked is another possibility. A new battery may go flat again if the underlying charging or electrical problem is not resolved.
What an inspection should clarify
The appropriate checks depend on the symptom: battery condition and state of charge, charging, terminals and connections, and possibly starter operation or current draw. State how long the car had been standing and whether the problem returned after a normal journey. Do not disconnect the battery with the engine running as a test.
Avoid turning one failed start into repeated strain
Do not keep attempting to start until the battery is exhausted. If jump-starting is being considered, follow the vehicle instructions and use competent assistance; the correct points and precautions vary. A damaged, leaking or unusually hot battery needs professional attention rather than further experiments.
Before asking for a replacement price
Include the vehicle details and battery age if known; “unknown” is more useful than guessing. The correct battery type and any vehicle-specific replacement procedure affect the quote. A battery purchase should follow a reasoned check, not just the fact that a jump-start once worked.
A useful service enquiry
Describe the symptom, when it occurs and any warning lights. Include the make, model, year and approximate mileage. Send relevant photographs or reports by email; the enquiry form does not accept attachments. Do not record or use your phone while driving.
