Windscreen washers not spraying: freezing, a leak or a fault?

The wipers move, but the screen stays dirty because no fluid reaches it. Do not immediately order new blades or a pump. The useful questions are what still works, where fluid may be escaping and whether freezing conditions preceded the problem.

The short answer

Clear visibility comes first. If you cannot maintain it in the conditions, stop safely rather than continuing with an obscured windscreen. When parked, check only what your handbook permits: the correct reservoir, suitable fluid and known circumstances. Do not repeatedly run the pump dry.

  • Say whether the front washer, rear washer or both have stopped spraying.
  • Distinguish absent fluid from streaks remaining after a normal spray.
  • Do not use hot water, an open flame or a higher-rated fuse as a shortcut.

Three different washer problems

Nothing reaches the glass

Report whether the wipers move and whether you heard the pump on the last ordinary use. Sound alone does not establish the system's condition.

Weak or misdirected spray

Explain whether one jet, the whole front screen or the rear window is affected. Do not enlarge jets with a needle or force their adjustment.

Fluid disappears quickly

Mention fluid already visible under the vehicle or dampness inside. Do not crawl underneath or remove trim just to find a leak.

Visibility takes priority over searching for a fuse

On a wet or salted road, conditions can change quickly. Being able to wipe a clean screen while parked does not guarantee adequate visibility on another journey. If visibility cannot be maintained, stop somewhere safe for the circumstances. Do not clean the screen or add fluid while driving or at an unsafe roadside location exposed to traffic.

This guide concerns fluid reaching the outside of the glass. If the spray is normal but the blades leave lines, use our separate wiper guide. A film inside the cabin concerns fogging or another interior contaminant, which the washers cannot remove. Separating these observations helps avoid buying parts unrelated to the actual problem.

After freezing weather, holding the stalk longer is not a fix

Establish which fluid was last added and whether it was suitable for the expected temperatures. Ford's instructions, for example, explain the need for appropriate winter fluid and warn against diluting a ready-to-use solution. A rating on a newly bought bottle does not establish the protection of the mixture already inside the reservoir and lines.

If freezing is suspected, do not repeatedly operate the system, pour hot water on the windscreen or heat the reservoir with a flame. Agree suitable thawing and checks for the particular vehicle. If fluid leaks or the system still does not operate after safe thawing, further topping-up is not automatically the right response.

Consider the pump, lines and jets as a system

Fluid needs a complete route from the reservoir through the pump and lines to the jets. Layout and control depend on the vehicle. Describe the known behaviour of both front and rear washers, where fitted, when arranging an assessment. That information helps investigate the cause; it is not a component-replacement procedure.

Pump noise does not prove that fluid reaches the glass. Silence does not by itself prove a failed pump. Explain whether the problem followed filling, frost or repair, or developed gradually. Bridging wires, removing unfamiliar fuses or substituting a higher fuse rating are not safe shortcuts to an assessment.

Book an assessment and ask for a meaningful quote

Send the model, year and a concise description of the front and rear washer behaviour. Include the last known fluid, the temperature when the problem appeared and any visible leak. For routine maintenance, ask whether checking it can be combined with other booked work. Confirm the assessment available and the relevant parts for your vehicle.

The price of fluid or blades is not the price of repairing pipes, a pump or its controls. We therefore give no universal washer-repair figure without findings. A quote should separate consumables, investigation and any authorised replacement. If visibility is compromised, agree safe handover rather than assuming you can drive to the workshop.

Your checklist before contacting the workshop

  • Vehicle and year, identifying the front or rear window affected.
  • What was observed on the last use: wiper movement, sound, weak spray or leakage.
  • Known fluid and any connection with freezing, filling or repair.
  • Whether the car is safely parked and whether other visibility problems are present.

Use existing observations. Email only relevant records taken while safely parked; the form does not accept attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Should I keep running the pump until it sprays?

Do not repeatedly run it empty or frozen. Ford's handbook specifically warns against operating with an empty reservoir.

The rear washer works. Does that prove the pump is good?

That conclusion does not apply to every system. Both circuits' behaviour is useful information, but appropriate checks must establish the cause.

Will new wiper blades fix it?

Blades do not restore missing fluid delivery. Separate washer operation from how effectively the blades wipe the glass.
