The timing belt is maintenance you should not postpone
A snapped timing belt usually means serious engine damage and a repair many times more expensive than a timely replacement. That is why the belt is changed preventively according to the manufacturer interval, typically every 60,000-120,000 km or every 4-6 years.
During the replacement we also check the tensioner, idler pulleys and the water pump if it is driven by the belt. Replacing the pump together with the belt saves a second disassembly.
When to deal with the timing belt
