Published 17 October 2026. General guidance; an inspection of your vehicle is still required.
The existing workshop image is illustrative; it does not document this specific fault. This guide cannot confirm whether your vehicle is safe to drive.
Cold start, warm engine or air conditioning switched on?
State whether it happens immediately after starting, once warm or when accessories are switched on. A brief speed change is not automatically a fault; a new irregular pattern, recurrence and other symptoms matter. Explain whether the engine actually stalls or you mainly feel a vibration. Make any recording only while safely stationary, never while driving.
Why there is no single part to order
Depending on the engine, ignition, fuel delivery, air supply or engine control may need investigation. An uneven idle does not necessarily have the same cause in a petrol engine and a diesel. A stored code is not on its own proof that the component named in its description has failed. Checks should follow the observed behaviour.
Useful information for diagnosis
Prepare the model, year, engine and approximate mileage. Mention warnings, recent repairs, a battery change and when the symptom first appeared. If it is intermittent, describe the circumstances rather than trying to force it to happen. Do not clear codes simply to extinguish the light before a check; useful context may be lost.
When not to continue driving
Repeated stalling in traffic, severe jerking, a flashing engine light, a fuel smell, smoke or a red warning calls for a safe stop and professional advice. Do not run the engine in an enclosed garage. Hard revving or disconnecting hoses and connectors is not a safe diagnostic shortcut.
A code-reading price is not the repair price
Basic diagnostics may be a starting point, but rough idle can require further investigation. Confirm the scope of the first check and how subsequent work will be approved. A repair cost or replacement component cannot be promised without findings. If the car jerks only while moving or accelerating, describe that separately from idle behaviour.
A useful service enquiry
Describe the symptom, when it occurs and any warning lights. Include the make, model, year and approximate mileage. Send relevant photographs or reports by email; the enquiry form does not accept attachments. Do not record or use your phone while driving.
